various mass spring system. what is the difference between two diagram and formula?

    In first diagram twk masses are connected at the same end of a spring.Here to calculate the time period the effective mass is simply sum of the twk masses. But in the second diagram two masses m1 and m2 are connected at the opposite end of a spring.Here to calculate the time period you have to take effective mass as the reduced mass of the system which is (m1m2/m1+m2). Second formula can be proved by considering the expansion of the spring about centre of mass of the system.

    in horizonal case there is no gravity while in vertical there is a gravity, but gravity will not effect frequency of oscillation...

    while see it there's no gravitational effects at all becoz spring is on surface of the earth.these are the basic difference b/w two diagrams.
