    A datum in GIS is a set of reference points on the earth's surface against which position measurements are made, and (often) an associated model of the shape of the earth (reference ellipsoid) to define a geographic coordinate system. See the attached figure for visual representation of a datum.

    Datum is collection of datas means here latitude and longitude . Datum basically represent the reference surface which coincides with the mean sealevel. Fir Goggle Earth the reference surface /datum is WGS-84 and for India it's Everest datum.
