A fold is a stack of originally planar surfaces, such as sedimentary strata, that are bent or curved during permanent deformation. Folds are geologic structures created by plastic deformation of Earth's crust. Folding in structural geology is the process of bending of the rocks due to the forces of tectonic plates and other external forces. Folding is caused by compression, tension, or shearing forces in different directions, and results in the formation of a three-dimensional structure. Folding can be used to study the structural geology of an area, as well as the properties of the rocks. It can also provide information about the stress and strain history of the rocks and the nature of the tectonic forces that have shaped the landscape.
