Fossil molds and casts preserve a three-dimensional impression of remains buried in sediment. The mineralized impression of the organism left in the sediment is called a mold. The mineralized sediment that fills the mold recreates the shape of the remains. This is called a cast.

Moulds and casts are three dimensional features and preserve the surface contours of the organism. A mould preserves a negative imprint of the surface, while a cast preserves the external form of the organism. See tha attached figure for images of mould and case. The right figure (negative impression or void) is showing a mould of a fossil and left figure is the cast (positive impression) associated with the same mould.
