    The stereochemistry (e.g. R or S) is very crucial in determining whether it is a meso compound or not. As a meso compound is optically inactive, so their stereochemistry should cancel out. For instance, R cancels S out in a meso compound with two stereocentres.

    You check only for IInd molecule as in 1st molecule plane of symmetry is not present in any case...So meso compound is only possible for IInd molecule having configuration :- RS or SR with two stereocentres.
