Porosity of shale decreases with increasing depth. Because of increasing overburden with depth, the void spaces becomes smaller and in turn reduces the Porosity.

Porosity of shale decreases with depth. But if we compare with sandstone the porosity was higher during fresh deposition gradually deposition thickness increases so pressure also. so compaction will be more in case of shale than sandstone and ultimately it will have no porosity left. and become impermeable. but sandstone will not be completely lost of porosity it will have some in the petroleum generation depth . That's why sandstone is reservoir and shale is cap rock.
