Elliptical polarized light formed from two mutually perpendicularly components of linear polarized light with unequal amplitudes. when a quarter wave plate introduce in the path of elliptical polarized light. it make extra 90 degree phase difference in the one component of elliptical polarized light. from this either 0 degree phase difference occur or 180 degree phase difference occur between the two components. that makes resultant light linear polarized.
