Active mass is the mass which participate in the chemical reaction

Suppose we have 1 mole reactant then 0.7 mole take part in reaction. Then it's active mass is 0.7 per mole

anand active mass is the effective concentration... It is is the molar concentration of the reacting substances "actually" participating in the reaction.

For example, suppose u have given x gms of a substance to participate in a reaction and the reaction takes y mts. In the above regard it is very obvious that the whole x gms will not participate in the reaction at any instance. The actual participation of substantial atoms will be less than x, otherwise the reaction would be rather instant. Hence, this actual amount of substantial atoms participating in the reaction per unit time is active mass

so don't be confuse with this anand...it is concentration which is actually participating in reaction...
