Bayer calculated the angle strain by assuming planar structure of cycloalkane which was wrong

    eduncle-logo-app

According to Bayer cyclopentane should be most stable. But According to HOC data it was found that it is not cyclopentane but cyclohexane is most stable

    eduncle-logo-app

Because cyclohexane was stable as it has least angle strain. Cyclohexane exist in chair form which allow it to attain bond angle of 109⁰

Stability order for cycloalkane is as follows 6>7>5>4>3.

Molecule always try adopt different geometry & shape to release strain.

3 member ring has no choice. 4 member ring has kite shape & 5 membered ring has envelope shape

    This is the complete picture.

Bayer strain is related to angle strain that comes in cycloalkane due to sp3 hybridization which says bond angle should be 109⁰28'. But due to cyclic structure it does not allow this bond angle due to which angle strain occur which is Bayer strain.
