Concrete dam: Concrete dam, also known as gravity dam is constructed in area with very stable rock foundations. The stability of gravity dam mainly depends on the weight of dam. Buttress dam: Buttress dam is made in area with relatively weaker foundation rocks. Load distribution is generally over a wide area. Solid concrete buttresses are made along downstream side of the dam to provide extra strength to the dam. In upper figure, the diagram is depicting the distribution of water pressure in case of dam with batter on upstream side. As shown in diagram, the water pressure is increasing with depth because of increasing thickness of water column. In lower figure the water pressure from below (uplift pressure) of the dam is shown. Uplift pressure decreases towards the downstream side of the dam.

Concrete dams are gravity dams usually built in large blocks divided by joints to make the construction more convenient and reduce thermal stress. A buttress dam or hollow dam is a dam with a solid, water-tight upstream side that is supported at intervals on the downstream side by a series of buttresses or supports. The dam wall may be straight or curved. Most buttress dams are made of reinforced concrete and are heavy, pushing the dam into the ground.

butress dam is a dam which is supported by butress in the downstream so the basement must be strong enough .they are made up of concrete the first figure is showing the butress case
