Rock bolting is a method of wall or roof stabilization used in engineering structures to prevent rockfalls. In rock bolting, a long anchor bolt is used to attach the wall or roof rocks with inner stable core rocks to provide extra stability. For this purpose, a small hole is drilled in wall or roof rocks of engineering structures and a long steel rod is inserted into the hole to attach the surface rocks with inner stable rock mass. By doing so, wall or roof rocks become attached with inner stable rocks and stability is enhanced. Rock bolting is frequently used in engineering structures like tunnels, underground mines and road slope. Refer to the attached figure for an external view of rock bolting. In the figure, you can see that the steel rod is inserted into the rockmass and bolted together.

A rock bolt is a long anchor bolt for stabilizing rock excavations, which may be used in tunnels or rock cuts. It transfers load from the unstable exterior to the confined (and much stronger) interior of the rock mass. Rock bolts work by 'knitting' the rock mass together sufficiently before it can move enough to loosen and fail by unraveling (piece by piece). As shown in the photo, rock bolts may be used to support wire mesh, but this is usually a small part of their function. Unlike common anchor bolts, rock bolts can become 'seized' throughout their length by small shears in the rock mass, so they are not fully dependent on their pull-out strength. Rock bolts are also be used to prevent rockfall.

Rock bolt, in tunneling and underground mining, steel rod inserted in a hole drilled into the roof or walls of a rock formation to provide support to the roof or sides of the cavity. Rock bolt reinforcement can be used in any excavation geometry, is simple and quick to apply, and is relatively inexpensive.  A rock bolt is a long anchor bolt, for stabilizing rock excavations, which may be used in tunnels or rock cuts. It transfers load from the unstable exterior to the confined (and much stronger) interior of the rock mass.
