River piracy (also known as river capture or stream capture) is a geomorphological phenomenon occurring when a river drainage system or watershed is diverted from its own bed, and flows instead down the bed of a neighbouring stream. Avulsion is the rapid abandonment of a river channel and the formation of a new river channel. Avulsion occurs as a result of channel slopes that are much less steep than the slope that the river could travel if it took a new course. Overall, river capture is associated with more than one river channel in which one river will be captured by other. Whereas, river Avulsion is related to the change in the river channel of the same river influenced by different factors.
