Upper bound of a set is that element which is greater than every elements of the set. Upper bound of a set may or may not exist in the set. If K is not upper bound that means it is not greater than all the elements of set S...that means there must exist atleast one element in S which is greater than y. similar arguments can be applied for lower bound.
