Why is there a need for hybridization? For the formation of orbitals having proper orientation in space and having tendency to overlap to High extents compared to simple atomic orbitals. VBT suggests that the number of covalent bonds formed by an atom is equal to the number of unpaired electrons present in it. However, sometimes, paired electrons present in lower energy orbitals are excited to higher energy orbitals giving rise to more number of unpaired electrons and hence more number of covalent bond formation takes place. These orbitals do not overlap directly with the orbitals of other atom. Before doing so, if needed, they get hybridized to form more capable hybrid orbitals having proper orientation in space. This change in orientation of hybrid orbitals compared to simple atomic orbitals give a molecule the shape it has
