Rift fault is a fracture in the terrestrial surface in which the rock material on the upper side of the fault plane has been displaced downward relative to the rock below the fault. Wrench fault is a type of strike-slip fault in which the fault surface is vertical, and the fault blocks move sideways past each other. Wrench faults have the largest displacements of any continental fault, sometimes hundreds of kilometers accumulated by millions of small movements.
