Diastem and Hiatus both are related to break in the stratigraphic record produced by combined effect of local erosion or nondeposition. Hiatus is a cessation in deposition of sediments during which no strata form or an erosional surface forms on the underlying strata; a gap in the rock record. Diastem is a short interruption in sedimentation with little or no erosion. They can also be described as very short unconformities. Diastems are very short duration unconformities.

are the scale of events any factor to differentiate, like one of them happens for a longer time than other?

Not always but diastem is generally used for inferring very short interruption in deposition.

Hiatus The total interval of geologic time which is not represented by strata at a specified position along a given stratigraphic surface. both are somewhat similar and often interchangeable.
