peroxisomes... within cell. Alpha oxidation of fatty acids occurs in the peroxisome, this metabolic pathway exists to degrade by-products of chlorophyll, a component of green vegetables in the diet. Phytanic acid is the primary molecule that requires the enzymes dedicated to alpha-oxidation. alpha - Oxidation of fatty acids occurs mainly in Brain. Enzymatic deficiency in alpha-oxidation (most frequently in phytanoyl-CoA hydroxylase) leads to Refsum's disease, in which the accumulation of phytanic acid and its derivatives leads to neurological damage.
