There are three major trends in passing from Eohippus to the modern horse :
    (i) Overall, an increase in size.
(ii) Molarization of the premolar teeth, prolonged growth of all the cheek teeth (hypsodont), and various changes in structure which meant that, when worn, the upper surfaces provided a better surface for grinding grass which contains silicates in addition to the cellulose of plant material generally.
(iii) Although with its relatively long limbs and tip-toed gait, Eohippus was already well suited to running, this was accentuated by the reduction to a single toe, and a modification of the foot ligaments (making them more elastic).
