The introduction of English as the medium of instruction in a Western system of education that included literature, natural sciences and mechanical inventions.
To study the emergence of English education in India, it was as early as 1792, that Charles Grant (1746-1823), an employee of East India Company recommended the dissemination of European literature and sciences through the medium of English among the people of India. The reasons given by Grant for this extraordinary importance attached to the study of English literature are significant. They form the backbone of all later arguments demanding an official approval of English studies.
In the treatise Observations on the State of Society among the Asian Subjects of Great Britain, Charles Grant presents as very sad and grim picture of the Indian society where different evils are manifest according to him; the evils being superstition, idolatry and immorality. Grant believed that if India need to progress from this state then it needs to be introduced to the English education and with it the western civilization will unfold itself to the Indian mass leading them to understand where they had been going wrong.
