Due to +R effect of -OCH3 group which arises due to the lone pair of oxygen atom,it become more electron donating group than -CH3 group where only +Ieffect is present. Always Resonence effect is stronger than Inductive effect except for halogen atom

The methoxy group on para position shows +M/+R effect and induces negative charge near the -OH group leading to instability of phenoxide ion.. Though, it also shows -I effect, we consider resonance effect dominating over inductive effect. In case of p-methylphenol, it also destabilises phenoxide ion due to its +I effect, but not as much as in case of methoxy group. Also on para position, inductive effect is not much effective and can be neglected. Hence, p-methylphenol is more acidic.

    eduncle-logo-app

    why?

    eduncle-logo-app

because Acidity is inversely proportional to +I, +M

    eduncle-logo-app

+M is dominated over +I so +M increase more electron density on O atom of OH, so this decrease the polarity between O- H bond

    eduncle-logo-app

less the polarity, less is the Acidity

    got it??

    eduncle-logo-app

    yes sir I got it

    thank you very much
