The electronic configuration of nitrogen is 1s22s22p3. It has 5 valence electrons. In the valence shell, it has s and p orbitals. Nitrogen does not has vacant d orbitals. It cannot expand its octet. In other words, it cannot have more than 8 valence electrons. Hence, nitrogen cannot be pentavalent .
