A scheme was introduced in the ESI Act 1948 called Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana. As per this scheme, an insured person who becomes unemployed after being insured three or more years, due to the closure of factory/establishment, retrenchment or permanent invalidity are entitled to :

(a) Unemployment allowance equal to 50% of wage for a max period of up to one year.

(b) Medical care for self and family from ESI Hospitals/Dispensaries during the period IP received unemployment allowance.

(c) The minimum period of unemployment should be 15 days to entitling the benefit.
