I will keep it simple rather than including terms that may be quite irrelevant. Aurora (as you have already studied in class 12th in magnetics chapter) are the products of the ionised gases or the particles that interact with the gases in the atmosphere of the earth specifically in magnetosphere. In general, they occur when highly charged electrons from the solar wind interact with elements in the earth's atmosphere. Solar winds usually follow the lines of magnetic force generated by the earth's core and flow through the magnetosphere, an area of highly charged electrical and magnetic fields. Also do take into consideration the different colors that are seen in Aurora on a pronounced scale. The color of the aurora depends on which atom is struck, and the altitude of the meeting. In short, which gas particles they are striking is an important and somewhat deciding factor for the resultant color. So if one is talking about color, then you can probably divide them as-- Green - oxygen, up to 150 miles in altitude Red - oxygen, above 150 miles in altitude Blue - nitrogen, up to 60 miles in altitude Purple/violet - nitrogen, above 60 miles in altitude. Now the question arises, why they are only seen in the northern and southern vicinity or the periphery but not on the other parts of the earth. The reason why auroras are inequitable (only in North and South always), itself lies in the reason for the formation. Yes, that's as simple as such. That easiest yet kind of confusing reason is Earth's global magnetic field. You can see in the figure attached below that magnetic field lines are leaving the magnetic south pole and going up into the magnetic north pole. Also one can easily explain the formation of Aurora's at some specific poles. Also as per renowned electromagnetic theory, charged particles are forced to travel only along magnetic field lines. They cannot travel across them or break free from them. That's what I've already explained above in the formation of Aurora Borealis(North) or Aurora Australias(South). Perfect explanation for their formation at some specified explanation is yet to be accepted and is waiting for concrete explanation which can be accepted worldwide prominently. Thanks:)
