    Answer: To eliminate minute beta rays present in it Explanation: As the projects alpha rays, it can have minute sized beta particles. Since lead is a high density metal and is a good absorbing element of alpha particles, it sends the alpha particles and eliminates beta particles. Hence it is kept during alpha scattering experiment.

    Lead has a very high density and Alpha, Beta particles cannot pass through it. Lead helps to concentrate the beam of these particles towards the gold foil. Also these particles if pass through body, it may destroy the DNA and I guess you won't be happy about it. So, for this reason Lead plate box of sufficient thickness is used in this experiment.
