if you consider in a rod when electic field is applied in a specific direstion , electrons inside the rod will feel the electic field in the opposite direction because they have negative charge so the force F=-qE is in the opposite direction so the flow of current will be in opposite direction of flow of electrons.

Initially when Franklin put a theory that flow of positive charge will give electric current, it was widely accepted, and many books, paper, ckts were made on that. later it was discovered that the current is actually due to electrons. now to avoid the rewriting of all these books, and reconvincing the accepted idea would create a mess. But now if you analyse, 1. convention current : positive charge moving from positive terminal to negative terminal, basically we are depositing positive charge at negative terminal. 2.actual current: negative charge is moving from negative terminal to positive is basically removing negative charge from negative, and in the process creating positive charge at the negative terminal. so both effects are equal, that's why we didn't bother the change.
