Each degrees of freedom contribute 1/2 kT per atom to the internal energy. This is the law we already know. Each translational motion and each rotational motion is associated with one degree of freedom. But for vibrational motion two degrees of freedom are associated. Here, I am attaching the detailed description of the relation of energy and degrees of freedom. Go through it. Try to understand and ask if still any doubt.
