Wave functions always spread out indefinitely into space. That is, a wave function has no “boundary” beyond which it can be said to be exactly zero. It has been shown that, if a quantum wave function were exactly zero beyond some finite region, then the same wave function would immediately—instantaneously—expand infinitely, and such rapid expansion would violate the special theory of relativity. This is sometimes called “Hegerfeldt’s theorem.”
