since zn, cd & Hg has fully filled d10 configuration in their ground state therefore they do not show property of typically transistion elements and are not regarded as transition elements.

because these have fully filled orbital in ground state as well as in excited state. while transition metals are those which have vacant d orbitals

Zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) are last d-elements in their periods. Their outer electron configuration is (n — 1)d 10ns 2. They form +2 ions only (M +2 ions) which have configuration (n — 1)d 10. As the elements or the ions they form have full filled (n — 1)d orbitals, they are not true transition elements.

The electronic configurations of Zn, Cd and Hg are represented by the general formula (n-1)d10 ns2. The orbitals in these elements are completely filled in the ground state as well as in their common oxidation states. Therefore, they are not regarded as transition elements.

This doesn't satisfy the condition of transition metal elements

    eduncle-logo-app

No partially filled d orbitals in ground state as well in their common O.S

    Got it Shweta??

    eduncle-logo-app

yes ..then why their position is in d block

    eduncle-logo-app

Due to some similarities in properties

    They are d10 system

Transition metal are those metal which have partially filled d orbital

    eduncle-logo-app

Transition elements are characterized by partially filled (n-1) d subshells. Zn, Cd and Hg are not  regarded as transition elements as they have completely filled (n-1)d subshell.  The electronic configuration of zinc is [Ar]3d104s2. The electronic configuration of cadmium is [Kr]4d105s2. The electronic configuration of mercury is [Xe]5d106s2.
