    The poet of Romantic age, William Blake, is considered as a seminal figure in Pre-Romantic movement. He was born on 28 November, 1757. He became the student of Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1759 where he showed keen disinterest against the artistic style of Joshua Reynolds i.e. his pursuit of ‘general truth’ and ‘general beauty’. Against Reynolds’ fashionable oil painting, Blake preferred the Classical precision of his early influences, Michelangelo and Raphael.
    Reynolds wrote in his Discourses that the “disposition to abstractions, to generalising and classification, is the great glory of the human mind”; Blake responded, in marginalia to his personal copy, that “To Generalize is to be an Idiot; To Particularize is the Alone Distinction of Merit”.
