X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a widely used technique to analyse the structure of slids. In an XRD experiment, a solid crystal is irradiated with monochromatic X-rays and the resulting data consists of diffractions spots. These bright spots occur due to the explanation given by which one of the following statements? (a) X-rays are being absorbed by the erystal and the structure in turn emits radiation at specific wavelengths. (6) X-rays are being refracted through the crystal and the rays bent at specific angles () X-rays are being scattered by individual atoms in the solid (d) None of the above. T1.

X-ray diffraction patterns are formed by interference. The incoming X-rays penetrate deeply into a crystal, but a tiny fraction is scattered by each atom. Since a crystal has a regular array of atoms, the scattered X-rays add up in phase in some directions, resulting in a bright spot.
