Asymmetry effect is the asymmetrical or irregular distribution of the ion cloud around an ion which occurs from the finite relaxation time when a voltage is applied. It leads to a decrease in the mobility of the ions. When a voltage is applied, the ions move to an oppositely charged electrode and drag the cloud of ions along with it causing the ionic atmosphere around the moving ion to be asymmetrical.
Electrophoretic effect is the tendency of the applied potential to move the ionic atmosphere which reduces the ionic motion in a solution. The attractive forces in between the solvent molecules and the ions cause the solvent molecules to be dragged along with the ionic atmosphere. The movement of the central ion is slowed down as it moves opposite to the ionic atmosphere, towards the pole.
Both electrophoretic effect as well as asymmetry effect reduce the velocity of the ions and operate in solutions of strong electrolytes with the result that a value of molar conductance lower than the value at infinite dilution is obtained.
