Every year, more than 1 crore students appear in CBSE, ICSE, and state board class 10th and 12th exams. While CBSE, ICSE are some centralized boards that have affiliated schools in every state, there are some different state boards functioning in one or two given Indian states only. Currently, there are 30 state boards working in India.
For school education, these board conducts Secondary School Examination (class 10th) and Senior School Certificate Examination (class 12th). These exams are commonly known as Board exams among students.

Andhra Pradesh State Board of Secondary Education
Andhra Pradesh State Board of Secondary Education is also known as Directorate of Government Examinations. It was established in 1953. Every year board of secondary education conducts SSC/OSSC exam in March. In this state, class 10th examination is conducted by Board of Secondary Education, Hyderabad and 12th class examination is conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education AP, Hyderabad.

Assam State Board of Secondary Education
Assam State Board of Secondary Education is called SEBA. It was established in 1961. Every year board of secondary education conducts HSLC/HSEC exam in the month of February-March.

Goa State Board of Secondary Education
GBSHSE is the board who conducts Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination every year. The class 10th and 12th exam are conducted in March. It is established on 27 May 1975 under "The Goa, Daman and Diu Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Act.

Gujarat State Board of Secondary Education
Gujarat State Board of Secondary Education was established in 1972 which conducts 10th & 12th class examination in March. GSEB has changed State level Examinations from JEE(Mains) to GUJCET.

Haryana State Board of Secondary Education
Haryana Board of School Examination (HBSE) was established in 1969. The board conducts the exam for class 8th, 10th, and 12th class. First and second semester exams are conducted in September and March respectively.

Himachal Pradesh State Board of Secondary Education

Karnataka State Board of Secondary Education
Karnataka State Board of Secondary Education was established in 1966 which conducts the 10th and 12th exam in the month of April. It is also called KSEEB. Every year the student strength is increasing tremendously in Karnataka.

Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Education
Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) was established in 1965 (amended in 1977). It is conducted class 10th and 12th level examination. The exams are usually held in the months of March, and October every year. The marks of March are the end of the educational year, and June marks the beginning of the new educational year in the state of Maharashtra.

Mizoram State Board of Secondary Education

Nagaland State Board of Secondary Education
The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) was set up through an Act by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and received the assent of the Governor in 1973. Every year in March, NBSE conducts the High School Leaving Certificate Examination and secondary examination.

Odisha State Board of Secondary Education

Rajasthan State Board of Secondary Education
With the promulgation of the Rajasthan Secondary Education Act in 1957, this Board was set up in Jaipur on 4th December 1957. It was shifted to Ajmer in 1961. The class 10th and 12th class examination held in the month of March by Rajasthan Board.

Tamil Nadu State Board of Secondary Education
Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education (TNBSE) is under the purview of the Department of Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, India. It was established in 1910. The exam conducts in March for 10th and 12th class.

The Department is responsible for conducting the SSC/OSSC Public Examinations which is conducted in March- April every year. It is also called Directorate of Government Examinations which is an independent department functioning under ministry of Secondary Education.

Uttar Pradesh State Board of Secondary Education
Uttar Pradesh State Board of Secondary Education was established in 1921 by United Provinces Legislative Council act. The first board examination was conducted in 1923. UP Board is Asia’s largest board in terms of the number of students. It conducts High school examination and Intermediate examination in the month of April. It is also called Board of High School and Intermediate Education Uttar Pradesh (BHSIEUP).

Uttarakhand State Board of Secondary Education
It was formatted in 2001 by Uttaranchal School Education act but in 2008, the institution was renamed Uttarakhand Board of School Education by the Uttaranchal Legislative Assembly. It conducts 10th and 12th level examination in March-April. It is also known as UBSE Board.

West Bengal State Board of Secondary Education

Central Board of Secondary Education
CBSE is a national level board which follows only NCERT curriculum. CBSE was formatted in 1962. It conducts the final examinations for Class 10 and Class 12 every year in the month of March. It conducts engineering, architecture, Medical courses such as IIT JEE, AIEEE, NEET, UGC NET Exam also. CBSE is the largest exam conducting body in the world.

National Institute of Open Schooling
NIOS was established in 1989 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. It is also called National Open School. It is similar to other board which conducts class 3rd to class 12th level examination.

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education
It was established in 1986 which was affiliated to French Board of Examination. It is a private board of education in India. It is also called ICSE Board.

Note: - Some states and union territory such as Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Puducherry, Jharkhand, Andaman and Nicobar, Daman & Diu, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Lakshadweep do not have their own education boards. They come under central or adjacent state boards.

Government Educational Institute: There are run by the Central Government or state governments, public sector undertaking or autonomic organizations and are wholly financed by the government. Local body institutions: These are run by municipal committees/ corporations/ NAC/ Zilla Parishads/ Panchayat Samitis/ Cantonment Board, etc. Private-aided institutions: These are managed privately but receive a regular maintenance grant from the government, local body, or any other public authority. Private unaided institutions: These are managed by an individual or a private organization and do not receive maintenance grant either from the government, local body, or any other public authority.
Note: - There are only 22% of private schools out of a total number of schools in India. While, if we consider secondary and higher secondary schools then we have found 56% of private schools among total schools.
