In Indian honour system, Padma Awards are one the highest civilian awards announced every year. These awards can be asked in current affairs’ section of various competitive exams like SSC, IBPS, RRB etc. In this article, we are giving you complete details of Padma Awards and the complete list of awardees of Padma Awards 2017.

 

 

 

Know All About Padma Awards: History, significance & determination

 

 

In the year 1954, the Government of India had introduced two major civilian awards named Bharat Ratna and “Padma Vibhushan”. Bharat Ratna as the highest civilian award and Padma Vibhushan as the second highest civilian award of our country.

 

Padma Vibhushan was then divided into three classes; Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg, and Teesra Varg. Later all these classes were renamed as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shree respectively.

 

There is no distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. The standards for the award include “service in any field including service rendered by Government servants” including doctors and scientists, but excludes those working with the public-sector undertakings.

 

 

 

The award recognizes work of individuals in the following Fields

 

1. Art (includes Music, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Cinema, Theatre etc.) 2. Social work (includes social service, charitable service, contribution in community projects etc.) 3. Public Affairs (includes Law, Public Life, Politics etc.) 4. Science & Engineering (includes Space Engineering, Nuclear Science, Information Technology, Research & Development in Science & its allied subjects etc.) 5. Trade & Industry (includes Banking, Economic Activities, Management, Promotion of Tourism, Business etc.) 6. Medicine (includes medical research, distinction/specialization in Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha, Allopathy, Naturopathy etc.) 7. Literature & Education (includes Journalism, Teaching, Book Composing, Literature, Poetry, Promotion of Education, Promotion of Literacy, Education Reforms etc.) 8. Civil Service (includes distinction/excellence in administration etc. by Government Servants) 9. Sports (includes popular Sports, Athletics, Adventure, Mountaineering, promotion of sports, Yoga etc.) 10. Others (fields not covered above and may include propagation of Indian Culture, protection of Human Rights, Wild Life protection/conservation etc.)

 

 

 

Every year, on the occasion of Republic Day (26th January) Padma Awards are announced in these three categories. The total number of awards to be given in a year (excluding posthumous awards and to NRI/foreigners/OCIs) should not be more than 120.

 

The President of India usually presents the award in the month of March/April. the awardees are presented a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion.

 

 

For the year 2017, the President of India has approved conferment of Padma Awards to 89 persons comprising 7 Padma Vibhushan, 7 Padma Bhushan, and 75 Padma Shri Awardees. In this list 19 of the awardees are women, there are 5 persons from the category of foreigners, NRIs, PIOs and 6 Posthumous awardees.

Padma Bhushan - Third Highest Civilian Award of India

 

 

Padma Bhushan is considered as the third highest civilian award after Padma Vibhushan. The award was established on 2 January 1954 by the president of India. The award is presented for “distinguished service of a high order”.

Padma Shree is considered as the fourth highest civilian award after Padma Bhushan. The award was established on 2 January 1954 by the president of India. The award is presented for “distinguished service”.
