Maithripala Sirisena will take over the position of president of Sri Lanka today (9th Jan, 2015) at 6:20 p.m. (local time).

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa was defeated by his challenger Sririsena on Friday after a presidential election.

Sirisena was officially elected as the 6th President by Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya.

Sirisena said he wished to thank Rajapaksa and urged the new President’s supporters to celebrate victory peacefully.

About Sirisena

Sirisena who is 63, is a former government minister who deserted the president and changed sides to become the opposition’s candidate in November, has vowed to root out corruption and bring constitutional reforms to weaken the power of the presidency.
